The Purpose of a Diabetes Control Diet

August 27, 2008 |

The idea of a diabetes control diet is to help the body to burn fat and not insulin. When a person's body begins to resist insulin, that person will be diagnosed as suffering from Type 2 diabetes. This means that there is a high level of insulin in the body which the cells in the body cannot, or will not, absorb. When this happens, the blood sugar levels get too high and it becomes necessary to control the blood sugar levels. This is often done through diet.

Starving Cells

As soon as your body begins to resist insulin, your cells begin to starve. This happens regardless of how regularly you eat. The cells no longer function properly and even if you have just eaten a meal and are actually well fed, the cells think they are starving! This will mean that incorrect messages are sent to the brain saying you are starving. This in turn means that the brain will send out hunger signals to the diabetic to say you are hungry and have a great need for carbohydrates. This then creates the stimulation of insulin which will then allow the cells to absorb glucose.

The problem is that the body is out of sequence due to the diabetic disease. The body must be controlled and prevented from burning glucose and this is where diabetes control diet comes in handy. It will teach you how to stop eating carbohydrates. A proper diabetes control diet will help you to channel the body's intake in such a manner that it will start to burn fat instead of glucose. By using a hormone known as glucagon (which helps the body to burn fat), a chain reaction is set off which enables the body to burn fat and turn existing reserves of fat into the much needed glucose.

When the blood in your body contains insulin, there is a halt in the production of glucagon. Unfortunately, when a diabetic has to inject insulin into the body, he or she, inadvertently injects the very thing that is preventing their body form burning fat. This is why a good diabetes control diet is such a good tool to help the body maintain a safe weight and to become more naturally in control of diabetes.

It is important when following a diabetes control diet, to understand that it is necessary to lower the consumption of carbohydrates (sugar as well as flour) and instead turn to eating foods which contain more proteins. It is a good idea to check out various diabetic diets to find the best one for you that suits both your tastes and lifestyle.

The most important concept of a diabetic control diet is that it offers a more natural way to manage diabetes. By reducing the need for insulin and increasing the consumption of low-carb foods, you will help your body to loose weight naturally and to control the sugar levels in your body reducing the need for serious medication. Needless to say, it is important to talk to your doctor if you are under medication so that they can monitor your progress.

Knowing the there is such a thing as a Diabetes Control Diet is a great comfort to people who are new to the disease. You can find many more tips to help you with diabetes at http://your-diabetes-tips.com/

Antioxidants are the body's main defense against free radicals as they work against the substances that create oxidants and the reactive substances that result from oxidation and reduction. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by supplying the missing electron so that the molecule may be stabilized. There are many different types of antioxidants ranging from dietary antioxidants to those that the body produces itself. The four major antioxidant nutrients are vitamin A (beta carotene), vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium.

Vitamin A, the first vitamin to ever be isolated, is essential for the proper function of the eyes and maintenance of the skin. It is found in the retina of all mammals as well as the liver. Vitamin A works to increase our resistance to infections by keeping all the linings in the body healthy. It is necessary for the health and moisture of the skin and the specialized cells lining the eyes, nose, mouth, throat, lungs, esophagus, stomach intestines, and urinary tract. When these cells don't have sufficient vitamin A, they thicken and harden, which is extremely detrimental to health and makes us more susceptible to infection. Vitamin A also protects the body from cardiovascular disease and cancer, and is necessary for new cell growth, something that is extremely important in slowing the aging process.

Beta carotene is the best known of the two carotenoids that form vitamin A, being composed of two vitamin A molecules that are split apart by liver enzymes when the body is low in vitamin A. If body levels are sufficient, the enzymes remain inactive and beta carotene does not divide, making it a safe source of vitamin A, without producing the toxic effects that come with high levels of vitamin A itself. If excess beta carotene is consumed it is stored in fat tissue or circulated in the blood. Beta carotene is one of the most powerful antioxidant nutrients as it can prevent free radical formation and inactivate existing free radicals. Once free radicals have been formed, it traps them and breaks the chain reaction that occurs.

Vitamin C holds a crucial role in many body processes that are necessary for life, among these being its role in collagen formation. Collagen is important in the every structure of the body, as it works like glue to bind cells together to form tissues. The integrity of collagen depends on vitamin C. Vitamin C also functions as one of the most powerful free radicals to prevent the damage that contributes to aging and age-related diseases.

It also works against pollution and toxins that damage cells and cause mutations, possibly even reducing some food carcinogens and protecting lung lining fluids against damage by air pollution. Vitamin C is important in the immune system and it also increases immunity to infectious diseases, lowers total cholesterol, enhances the effect of vitamin E, promotes wound healing, growth, tissue repair, and helps with the utilization of iron.

Vitamin E prevents aging by prolonging the useful life of cells found in the body. It also works to protect vitamin C and vitamin A from free radical activity so that they may remain potent. Vitamin E has the ability to stop a free radical chain reaction as it is happening and plays an extremely important role in preventing the per-oxidation of lipids (cholesterol). It protects the cell membrane, which in turn causes it to help protect the body from disease.

Selenium, one of the ten essential trace minerals, can be found in all tissues of the body. It is best known for its antioxidant role and its function in fighting cancer. It protects the liver from damage and works to stop lipid per-oxidation. Selenium is vital in maintaining the elasticity of body tissues and preventing the oxidation of fatty tissue, in turn combating the effects of aging. Selenium causes the skin to be healthier, muscle mass and tone are more easily maintained, and the heart is strengthened. Selenium works along with vitamin E, enhancing the effects of each other. It is important to get our vitamins and minerals on a daily basis to maintain a health happier life.

Stress affects your body in various ways, most of which are debilitating. When you are stressed out, your sympathetic nervous system is being over stimulated. Your body\'s production of key hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline and neurotransmitters is out of balance.

When you are under stress your body responds by keeping blood sugar levels high for quick energy. Your body is providing you the energy to handle life threatening emergency situations such as a robbery. As a short-term solution to a perceived or real threat, this is not harmful. But when the stress becomes chronic due to job and family problems or your tendency to worry, the response is lasting too long. The consistently high blood sugar levels interfere with your body\'s ability to regulate glucose which increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes or obesity.

Chronic stress also puts you at risk for heart problems and pre-mature aging. It can cause a myriad of other health problems because it suppresses your immune system and leaves you vulnerable to any number of illnesses.

In addition, chronic stress can lead to the development of unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and overeating.

Your brain is especially vulnerable to stress which can cause short-term memory loss and over a period of time, actual brain atrophy. Stress also is responsible for mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. However, it is the mind which decides what is and is not stressful. Scientists have learned that it is the perception of stress rather than the duration or degree which ages cellular DNA.

This basically means that stress is a health problem that is under your control. Everyone has heard the phrase \"mind over matter.\" While it is true that what happens to you is often beyond your control, you can always control how you react to what happens.

Remember the Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the serenity
To accept the tings I cannot change
The courage to change the things I can
And the wisdom to know the difference.

For instance, you may not be able to stop your angry teenager from venting her frustrations at you, but you can decide not to buy into her anger.

Different people have different triggers. Everyone needs to figure out, when they are calm, and not under stress, just what their trigger points are and how they can deal with them. In other words, you know your seemingly ungrateful teenagers rouses your anger so how can you cope the next time it happens? What are some strategies you could use to solve your job problems?

Everyone has different methods to handle stress. What works for your neighbor, husband or co-worker may not help you. Some people use various yoga techniques. Others practice breathing and relaxation exercises. People have tried listening to music, aromatherapy, exercise, prayer, or engaging in a calming hobby such as gardening.

You also need to follow a healthy diet, get adequate sleep, and avoid toxic people - the ones who pull you down. While you want to avoid loneliness, you should spend your time with the friends who make you feel good.

Just the act of making a plan, which is called cognitive-behavioral therapy, will put you on the road to a calm, centered life which will keep you younger and most important, happier.

As we age our eyes are vulnerable to three different medical problems. The most serious is age related macular degeneration or AMD. This disease is due to cell degeneration in the macula, that part of the eye which controls central vision. Another problem that accompanies aging is the development of cataracts. A cataract is due to free radical damage, which causes a cloud over the lens.

Older people are also prone to dry eye syndrome since, in the aging process, our eyes become less efficient in producing tears.

Dry eye syndrome does not interfere with vision but it is painful. Cataracts can be successfully removed in outpatient surgery and vision is restored. However, macular degeneration cannot be reversed; it is a chronic problem.

So as we age, it is important to make nutritional choices which will ward off these diseases and protect our vision. It is just as important that we avoid the foods, which may help impair our vision.

Two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin are present in large quantities in the retina and lens of the eye. Here, they act as antioxidants to shield our eyes from damaging free radicals. There has been several research studies performed on the value of these carotenoids in eye health.

On April 7, 2004, the North Chicago VA Medical Center stated in a press release that lutein had been proven to help prevent and even reverse the symptoms of AMD.

Both lutein and zeaxanthin are found in dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, collard green and other leafy greens. However, doctors are also advising that people increase their intake of these substances through supplementation some research studies demonstrated that to be effective in reversing symptoms of macular degeneration, the doses had to be higher than one can obtain from food consumption alone.

Eggs are also good sources of these antioxidants. A study was reported in the Journal of Nutrition which stated that thirty-three adults who ate one egg every day for five weeks had an increase of the carotenoids without any adverse effect on blood fats or cholesterol.

Beta-carotene, found in yellow and orange vegetables such as carrots, cantaloupes, pumpkin and squash is also important for normal vision and retinal health.

A mineral, which you need in your diet for optimal eye health, is zinc. This is readily available in fortified cereals, whole grains, legumes and nuts.

It is also important to eat fish, which contains the omega-3 fatty acid DHA. Fish has been found to be helpful for people with dry eye syndrome. Omega-3 is found in cold water fish such as salmon and black cod. People who are concerned about the mercury levels in fish should consider a fish oil supplement.

Finally, the antioxidant glutathione is necessary for lens health. However, this can\'t be obtained from food. Your body manufactures this in your liver but first you must eat sulfur-containing foods such as onions, garlic, shallots and capers. However, some doctors recommend acquiring this as a supplement (250 mg. twice daily of alpha-lipoic acid).

What you don\'t eat can be as important as what you do eat. It is recommended that you avoid trans fats, saturated fats, and foods made with sugar and flour. These foods can stress your liver and that will negatively impact your eye function. In other words, try to stay away from processed and fast foods.

While some of these recommendations have been beneficial for those having symptoms of various eye problems, you will realize greater benefits if you start while your eyes are still young and healthy.

To Be Healthy Or Not to Be?

|

That is the question! The answer has to come from you. Not just in the form of words, but also in the form of a decision followed by action.

Good health. Is that alive and well in the United States these days? In 1976, the obesity rate was so low in the US, that in a survey that was done, it couldn't even calculate a percentage of obese people vs. healthy people. It was an oddity to see a 300-400 pound person. Today, the lowest obesity percentage recorded is in Colorado, which shows a less than 15% obesity rate. The highest state has an obesity rate of over 30%! It is not uncommon to see/read about or hear about a 300-400 pound person daily any longer! It is projected, that if the obesity rate continues to grow at the current rate, that by 2048 the U.S. will have a 100% obesity rate. How did we get here? Is there a way to get back?

Let's look at the solution. First and foremost, you must make a decision. To be healthy or not to be? That is the question you must WANT to answer. I am going to share with you some basic steps to take in order to get on the path of good health. These 5 steps will get you started:

1) Change the water that you drink.

Drink distilled water with trace minerals.

2) Stop drinking soft drinks. At the very least cut back drastically. All soft drinks, yes even diet soft drinks, should be avoided.

3) Change the order of hour meals. I am not saying to change your diet over night, that is hard and can be discouraging. Just eat your proteins, starchy carbs, and simple carbs before 3 pm. After 3 pm eat only fibrous carbs, fish, and salads. It is best to eat 6 meals per day; (each meal should contain a carb, a protein, an a fatty acid.)

4) Do some sort of physical cardio workout 3 times/week for 20 minutes. Walk briskly, jog, or an aerobic exercise with resistance.

5) Get the proper amount of nutrients into your body through supplements. Nutrition that targets your whole body, in 3 parts, is best. A greens supplement that will build your immune system by balancing your pH level. A supplement that will boost your antioxidant levels to fight free radical damage to your cells. Finally a supplement of L-Arginine (5000 milligrams per dose) to clean out your arteries and increase the flow of the healthy blood that the previous 2 supplements produce.

These 5 simple things can work wonders for your health and produce great results for fat loss, not just weight loss, but fat loss!

In order to fully benefit from the first 4 steps, you must go through an increased consumption protocol of the supplements. Here is what is recommended:

- Take the L-Arginine product 4 times a day for 2 weeks, then 2 times a day afterward (also take the L-arginine product 20 minutes before you do your workout).

- Take the greens product 3 times a day for 2 weeks, then 1-2 times a day afterwards.

- Take the antioxidant rich supplement 2 times per day everyday.

There you have it. Simple to do, but difficult to change and continue. You will see results if you stick with it. Take the challenge of doing this for 90 days and see the results for yourself.

You are not trying to change your whole diet all at once here. Changing the way you eat, what you eat and how you eat it takes time, so don\'t try to change everything overnight. You can find great meal plans anywhere on-line and you should, but that is something that will be easier for you to do by the end of this 90 day challenge.

Remember, always consult your physician before starting any exercise program.

Does Resveratrol Extend Ones Lifespan?

August 26, 2008 |

Resveratrol is a phytonutrient molecule whose time has come. It is a polyphenolic phytoalexin present in grape skins and red wine that has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Resveratrol has potent antioxidant and anti-tumorigenic activities as well as important protective effects on the nervous system and more.

This component of red wine has been found to inhibit the proliferation of a variety of human cancer cell lines, including those from breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreatic, and thyroid cancers. More recently, reports on the potential for resveratrol to inhibit the development of cancer and extend lifespan in cell culture and animal models have continued to generate scientific interest.

Clinical trials are currently underway to address this question and to also determine whether resveratrol might be beneficial in cancer treatment. There is an extensive and growing amount of work devoted to the possible links between diet and a reduction in the risk of breast cancer as well as other forms of cancer. Recently, reports have come in that resveratrol could inhibit a number of cellular events associated with the initiation, promotion, and progression of cancer.

Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging report that a natural substance found in red wine, known as resveratrol, offsets the bad effects of a high-calorie diet in mice and significantly extends their lifespan. Research at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Ohio State University indicates that resveratrol has direct inhibitory action on cardiac fibroblasts and may inhibit the progression of cardiac fibrosis. Furthermore, researchers discovered that the liver and other systems in obese mice remained healthy (when they should not have) and fat related deaths dropped thirty one percent for those mice given a resveratrol supplement.

Research by Harvard Medical School Professor of Pathology David Sinclair, MD has shown that resveratrol extends the life span of mice by up to twenty four percent and the life span of other animals by as much as fifty nine percent. Another way this research differs from earlier work is that it looks specifically at the expression of genes known to be affected by aging in several important tissue types. The group explored the influence of the agent on heart, muscle and brain by looking for changes in gene expression in those tissues.

Insulin and glucose levels in mice on the high fat plus resveratrol diet were closer to the mice on standard diet than to the mice on the high fat diet. Resveratrol again demonstrated changes associated with longer lifespan, including increased insulin sensitivity, reduced insulin like growth factor-1 levels, increased AMP activated protein kinase and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1alpha activity, increased mitochondrial number, and improved motor function. But, in contrast resveratrol treatment had no significant effect on body weight, serum cholesterol, radial bone growth, epithelial cell height, or messenger RNA levels for insulin-like growth factor I.

Resveratrol supplements on the market today may contain anywhere from 10 to 150 mg of resveratrol per pill, but the effective doses for chronic disease prevention in humans are not known. Resveratrol is not known to be toxic or cause adverse effects in humans, but there have been only a few controlled clinical trials to date. However since there aren't studies in humans, it's impossible to say how much resveratrol is needed to create health benefits.

The amount of resveratrol in food varies greatly. Of course, understanding exactly how procyanidins work in the human body remains to be investigated, and the researchers plan to dose people with the compound in a future clinical trial. Resveratrol is a good antioxidant in any potency to help reduce oxidative stress, improving the immune system, cardiovascular system, and all other parts of the body that benefit from antioxidants.

Acne Remedies

|

Acne is a bad problem for many people and quite often it seems almost impossible to get rid of them. There are hundreds of over the counter skin care products that promise to help but often none do and sometimes even a doctor will write out a prescription for medicine that is supposed to help with skin problems. Unfortunately, these do not always work either and some people end up spending thousands of dollars on products and medicine that just do not work.

What some people need to know is that spending a lot of money to try and get rid of acne isn't necessary. There are various home remedies that can help with acne with which many people have success in clearing their skin up. You may not know it, but you have some of these home remedies in your kitchen right now so without further ado, here is a list of home remedies that are said to help get rid of acne:

• Water

Everyone knows the importance of drinking a lot of water every day. Sometimes people think they're drinking enough water but in reality they're not. Acne sufferers should start increasing their intake of water.

• Egg whites

Although it sounds gross, making a mask out of egg whites, three to four times a week will really help clear the skin up. Make sure the mask is left on for at least twenty minutes.

• Aspirin mask

Aspirin masks have become rather popular over the last couple of years. Many models claim to use aspirin masks but if you decide to try this, make sure you get the uncoated aspirin. Let a few aspirins dissolve in water and rub it on your face. If the itch bothers you, you can add some moisturizer to it. Leave the aspirin mask on for at least twenty minutes for three or four times a week.

• Garlic

Even if you can't stand the smell, you may want to try rubbing raw garlic on your face as it is reputedly a very good home remedy for acne.

• Tea tree oil

Many people swear by the wonders of tea tree oil. Pour some in a pot of water and steam your face for at least a half hour. Just be careful not to burn yourself!

• Some other miscellaneous home remedies for acne treatment include lemon juice, fenugreek leaves, primrose oil, orange peels, cucumbers, honey and goldenseal.

Of course none of these remedies will do their job correctly unless you start drinking copious amounts of water every day. It is also important to cut down on greasy foods and sugar and you'll be very surprised at how clear the skin looks if you can go a few days without eating any unhealthy foods or drinking sugary drinks.

If you do want to try out any home remedies, try not to overdo it. Using one for three or four times a week is enough. Using too much may only make things worse. Try one remedy for two weeks to see if you notice any improvements. Don't be tempted to waste anymore of your money on products that probably won't work. You can save thousands in the long run if you stick to a home remedy plan for acne as well as a healthier diet.

There is a big misconception about how you should train to lose weight. A lot of personal trainers suggest you should only do cardio training and that you shouldn\'t bother as much with weight training, but I have seen that people who do both to get the best results.

This happens because of the fact that when you are cardio training you will mainly be \"burning\" calories and thus losing weight. However your body won\'t automatically get that lean look you may be searching for.

If all you want to do is to burn some fat and lose some weight you will of course acheive that with hard work. But will you have that body to be proud of?.

In itself, it is a great achievement to lose excess weight but you may also want to look your best in that bikini, or any other clothing that reveals those certain parts of your body. You want to be really proud of what you have achieved so you wouldn\'t hesitate to take your shirt off at the beach or swimming pool.

If you want to have that toned lean body you should do at least a bit of weight training and this is why it\'s imperative you either join a gym, or get some type of home exercise machine.

Not only will you have all the tools to create a proper exercise plan but you will be a lot more motivated dreaming about having that nice new body.

It\'s been shown that for most of us doing weight lifting around three days per week is usually sufficient to see results. Do some research, and consult with your doctor to find out what will work best for you.

Some people think that the more they train the faster will they see results but they couldn\'t be more wrong. The fact remains - our bodies need time to recover and if you don\'t give it the time and the rest it needs you will sabotage your own success. If you over-train you will start seeing a decline in the speed of your improvement which will tell you that you need to change something. There needs to be a balance with everything and that holds true for your weight loss regimen too.

The only thing that needs to be a constant with your goals is determination and when you have that one sorted out, everything else will fall into place all by itself.

Realistically you don\'t need the next technique to help you lose weight or the next magical supplement because all those could achieve is a temporary result (if even that). I have a friend who lost weight simply because he was determined. He didn\'t study any of weight loss plans. He just joined a gym, started running every single day and he ate less. In a year he was a totally different man. After he achieved his goal I asked him what was his secret and he told me what I told you just before. He said he knew that all he needs is to keep doing it until he loses weight. He had the determination and because of that he couldn\'t fail. For him there was never a bit of a doubt if he would ever succeed or not.

This is all you need too, just stay on track and never ever stop trying.

Determination is the key to any successful weight loss program. Reach for that goal and find the answers to your questions about some of the more popular weight loss ebooks. We have researched and done all the hard work for you at Top Five Weight Loss Products. Article by Russ Hancock

Chronic hypertension (high blood pressure) is a leading indicator for heart attacks, strokes and reduced life span. It has several causes, ranging from physiological to situational and lifestyle driven. There are many treatments for this condition. Stress relief games are excellent in providing an effective and side effect-free alternative.

Most of the medical treatments for high blood pressure focus on the physiological symptoms, or some of the generalized physiological triggers in the body, like higher cholesterol levels. (High cholesterol levels build up plaques on the inner walls of arteries, and much the same way that constricting a garden hose makes the pressure higher, they do the same to your arterial system.) Statin reducers, and an entire gamut of drugs designed to artificially lower your blood pressure by blocking hormone receptors, receptors that cause your arteries to squeeze harder, are making big pharmaceutical companies a lot of money.

However, there are other factors involved that are not only directly under your control, but are less expensive as well. It is important to understand that temporary elevation of blood pressure is a survival mechanism – it ensures that highly oxygenated blood reaches your cells and muscles when you\'re in a flight or fight situation. What happens is that our modern society (and our ability to internalize anything that causes stress) causes that system to \"fire\" when a deadline approaches, or when a doctor is about to prick you with a needle. As far as your limbic system is concerned, it is convinced that there\'s something that\'s about to eat you lurking in the office, not a manager who needs that report on his desk before you go home. The limbic system is unable to differentiate genuine life-threatening harm from regular nuances of our daily lives.

And it\'s not only deadlines that create stress. Stress causes a cumulative strain on the body. Lots of people accrue stress the way a small child accrues marbles. For certain personality types, without a lot of stress, they get nothing done (and they\'re often hooked on the rush of getting through the \"emergency run\").

So, how do we get rid of stress? We recommend taking up some games. Here are some with proven therapeutic influences on the stress hormone systems.

Handball – this game causes you to move the entire body, and it utilizes the cortisone hormones of stress to \"flush the system clear\". This is a good \"stress burner\" - similar sports include racquetball and tennis. These sports required total body motion, depth perception and spatial awareness. They simulate the \"body kinematics\" of being a Paleolithic hunter, and as such, trigger many of the same release mechanisms.

Meditation and Yoga – whether you\'re doing deep diaphragmatic breathing, or reaching your inner core, both of these are good exercise paths for relieving stress if you don't have the time for an intensive stress-burning session at the gym. They also have the benefit of being something you can do when you feel stress onset.

Singing and Walking – singing is similar to yoga; to sing well, you sing from the diaphragm, which causes elevated blood oxygen levels. Also try to take time out of your day to walk a mile. These methods are good for clearing the head and the stress hormones from your system.

All of these will lead you be happier and more productive in your day to day life; indeed, there\'s a growing body of evidence the best time of the day for thinking or tackling difficult problems is 30 minutes after you\'ve caught your breath from mild exercise or a heavy walk. There may be something to the body\'s natural tendency to pace when thinking.

And, by reducing their stress, they may even make you live longer! Keep that in mind when utilizing these stress relief games.

If you are like most people you will likely notice a person's hair and style on first impression. We also notice if a person has thin or thick hair, curly, wavy or straight hair. We may not notice everything around us but when it comes either sex, we instinctively observe our competition or potential future partner.

When it comes to hair, geography plays a large roll as to what type of hair we inherit. For example;

-People of Asian decent have black thick hair. If you were to look under a microscope, you would see that the strand of hair is thick and well rounded. This type of hair usually looks lustrous and straight because of the weight and in some cases blue black in color. It can be quite striking. People with thick hair have approximately 150,000 thick hairs on their head and combing can be challenging to say the least. Leave in conditioners with gentle even pressure are great for this hair type. Also, if you are not using salon quality hair care products, you may have to change out to different brands on a regular basis so that you avoid product build up. Better still, use salon quality products all the time!

- The only other hair that can be thicker than Asian hair is the true red head! Red hair originated in northwest Europe, particularly Scotland. The study of ancient history denotes the early Celtics, known as Caledonians, were very large limbed and had striking red hair. The early Romans described them as a wild people. Today, the red headed people of Scotland still have somewhat of a wild, hot tempered reputation.

-People of European descent can have blonde or dark hair. The fairest blondes tend to come from central Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. The rest of Europe has predominantly darker hair. Close inspection under a microscope shows that these strands of hair are thinner and round to oval shaped. These types of strands can give you straight or wavy hair. There is not as much weight to this type of hair as the Asians. People with thinner hair strands tend to have approximately 90,000 hair strands. A lot less than their Asian cousins. Volumizing shampoos and conditioners are excellent for this hair type.

-People of African decent have dark, tight, very curly hair. Again, under close inspection under a microscope shows that the hair stands are thin and flat. It is the flatness of the strands that cause the hair to curl right up. There is not much weight to it. The most important thing to watch for, is keeping this type of hair moisturized. The flat thin strands are prone to drying out so a gentle cleanser and moisturizing conditioner are very helpful in keeping the hair natural and soft looking. Care also needs to be taken when combing or brushing because breakage occurs easily with this hair type. Minimize the use of blow driers and curling irons.

Genetically, the dominant hair color is brown. This can mean anything from light to very dark brown, almost black.

With the intermixing of races, it is thought that natural blonde hair will soon die out and that the only option to be blonde is through hair dyes.

If you look at North America, you will see the most diverse hair colors and styles due to the migration of people from all parts of Europe, Russia, Asia, Africa, South America, etc. Some races have dominant genes when it comes to hair type and color. Derived from plants and offering life-enhancing practical benefits, the advantages of essential oils become apparent. These oils are a by-product of the plant's metabolism and thought to be their immune system. They are extracted by steam distillation, which is the purest way, from various parts of the plant such as the petals, stems, seeds, leaves, bark and roots or by expression from citrus peels.

These oils, contrary to the word describing them does not have an oily feel to it. Most are clear although some are diluted with carrier oil such as sweet almond, apricot kernel or grape seed.
What is Aromatherapy & Essential Oils?
Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential oils to improve physical and mental well being. It is a process of diffusing pure essential oils which is then absorbed through the skin and through inhalation. Smell has a profound effect on how we react physically, emotionally, and mentally to our surroundings.
Many every day scents remind us of the different seasons, a location or situation and happy times. Thus essential oils may also have an effect on our physical, mental and emotional well-being. The inhaling of these oils can also influence the release of brain chemicals such as serotonin.
How Are They Used?
Every oil is unique with various ways of applying. They can be used in an electric or candle-type diffuser, mixed with water to use as a spray, blended into carrier oil for use on the skin, or added to soaps, lotions, and other body care products.
Help for stress, depression and fatigue can be found in geraniums, bergamot and lavender. Eucalyptus stimulates and along with oregano is a good antiseptic and antihistamine. Neroli from orange blossoms is good for insomnia and rosemary is a good physical and mental stimulant as well as for relaxing at the end of a long day.
How Long Do They Work?
After inhalation or absorption through the skin they efficiently leave the body through exhaling and perspiration in about four hours. Therefore, there is no residual build-up or any side effects that can often be associated with pharmaceuticals.

How Are Essential Oils Stored?
Care must be exercised in their storage. Keep them in dark, air-tight, glass bottles away from exposure to heat or extreme temperature fluctuations. Handle with great respect and responsibility because these are concentrated oils. Keep them out of the reach of children.
Organic or Non Organic
Organic oils are extracted or distilled from plants not treated with pesticides, herbicides, irradiation, or any other type of unnatural treatment. Non-organic oils may contain toxic and unnatural substances that can be harmful or cause allergic reactions. You will pay more for oils distilled from organic plants because of the higher cost of growing with organic means.
Purchasing Essential Oils or Making Your Own
It is important to check out the information provided by the merchants for their products. Ultimately the decision is yours and based on your research you can find the blend best suited to your needs.
Important oils can often be bought as blends. However, there is no control over the blend when not mixing it yourself. Essentially the advantages of making your own are the savings realized by not buying every essential oil individually. However there may be a problem reliably doing your own blending.

History

Aromatherapy is widely thought to have originated in Egypt. Medical writings dating around 1555 BC give remedies for many kinds of illnesses and methods of application that are used in aromatherapy and herbal medicine today. It is a believed that the ancient Chinese civilizations were using some form of aromatherapy at the same time as the Egyptians. Going back to about 2700 B.C an herbal book written by Shen Nung is the oldest surviving medical book in China. It contains information on over 300 plants.
The Egyptians extracted oils from aromatic plants and incense was one of the earliest ways of using aromatics. Frankincense was burned at sunrise as an offering to the sun god, Ra and myrrh was offered to the moon. Many fragrant oils were used after bathing and for massages.
The Greeks also used aromatic oils for medicine and cosmetics. Taking much of their medical knowledge from the Greeks, Rome was known as the bathing and massage capital of the world and they went on to use and improve aromatherapy.
Trade routes began opening up to East India and Arabia so new products were being imported to Rome. It took several years to perfect the process, but the physician Avicenna who lived from A.D 980 to A.D. 1037 is thought to have first used the distillation process to obtain the rose essence. About that same time, the Arabs discovered how to distil alcohol making it possible to produce perfumes without a heavy oily base.
One of the main aspects of traditional Indian medicine known as ayurveda – using aromatic massage - has been used for more than 3000 years. The invasion of South America by the conquistador's brought about the discovery of more medicinal plants and aromatics as the Aztecs were well known for their plant remedies. The Spanish were amazed at the number of medicinal plants found in Montezuma's botanical gardens.
The North American Indians were also using these oils and produced their own herbal remedies. About the 19th century scientists in Europe and Great Britain began their research on the effects of essential oils on bacteria in humans.
Rene Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, began researching the healing powers of essential oils after burning his hand and immersing it in lavender oil. He was impressed by how quickly the burn healed. In 1937 he wrote a book about the anti-microbial effects of the oils and also coined the word 'aromatherapy'.

French medical doctor, Jean Valnet, biochemist Margaret Maury, and Madame Micheline Arcier, who has been practising aromatherapy for forty years in London, combined their techniques and created a form of aromatherapy now used all over the world.
Important Tips for Purchasing Oils
Do not buy anything in a clear glass bottle as the light can damage the properties; not in plastic which can cause contamination; not with a rubber dropper which can dissolve and contaminate. And finally, look for a vendor who tests oils and will supply samples.
