Home Water Filtration Systems

September 30, 2008 |

Water filtration is the process by which water for domestic use is cleaned and impurities removed. Filtration can be done at different stages of the water purification process depending on how much impurities are contained in the water. Home water filter systems could rage from simple physical barriers that are attached to the water faucets to complex processes that involve the use of chemicals and biological processes to filtrate the water.

Common Home Water Filters

The granular activated carbon filter is usually attached to domestic faucets and cleans the water by absorbing chlorine and chloramines from water. It also removes other contaminants, and also removes or reduces odor and bad tastes. Another common home water filtration system is the metallic alloy filter. They are also attached to domestic water outlets. They are made from copper-zinc alloy that react with chlorine present in water therefore filtering it.

Ceramic filters are another type of home filtration systems. They involve passing water through chambers whose outlet allows only water molecules to pass through. This kind of filters can only filter dirt, bacteria and debris but cannot filter chemical contaminants.

Installing Home Water Filtration Systems

There are two main ways of installing home water filtration systems. They can either be mounted on the faucet or the plumbing system. Mounting on the faucet is much easier and it costs less money. However, it requires constant filter cleaning and changing. Having a filter system installed in the plumbing is more expensive but it does not require much cleaning and maintenance.

Before deciding on what water filtration system to purchase for your home, it is advisable to have your water tested for impurities in order to determine which type of filtration system to purchase. According to the impurities contained in the water, consumers have the option of buying an in-line reverse-osmosis system or a carbon filter. Carbon filters are mainly used to filter water that contains organic chemicals, chlorine, pesticides or chloroform. Reverse-osmosis on the other hand is used to filter water that has organic contaminants, sodium, nitrates, ferrous iron, lead or fluoride.

Advantages of Home Water Filtration Systems

One of the main advantages of home water filtration systems is the fact that they enable users to have clean water for drinking. They can also be used to soften hard water that is used for laundry and other uses in the house. When laundry is done using soft water, it leaves the washing much softer and less detergent is used.

Most home water filtration systems come with a meter that indicates when the user needs to change the filter. This ensures that they do not drink unfiltered water because there is no chance of forgetting to replace the filter. Another advantage is the cost effectiveness of home water filtration systems. After installation, not much maintenance and upgrading is required. Users may however need to change the filter once in a while.

Using water filtration systems also saves the user money in terms of medical bills. Drinking unfiltered water is mainly associated with certain diseases. With the use of water filtration systems, people are assured of a happy life and healthy lifestyles.

Water filters are specialized sieves used to ensure that water is clean and safe for drinking. With water being vital to the survival of humanity, the use of water filtration systems is of great importance. Unfiltered water carries with it sediment and microorganisms that may be harmful to ones health. This makes the addition of a filtration system in the home of great value.

There are different types of water filters available commercially that intend to serve the same purpose - making water safe for use. These filters use various processes such as distillation, reverse osmosis and carbon bonding.

The distillation process involves boiling the impure water until it vaporizes leaving any particles in it behind. The vapor then passes through a device that cools it back to liquid form. This process, tested in laboratories using an apparatus known as a distillation tank, has proven quite effective.

Reverse osmosis is a more complicated process. The water molecules, which are under great pressure force their way through a thin film or membrane. The membrane blocks substances in the water from seeping through. Reverse osmosis has proven effective in removing heavy metals such as lead and aluminum from water as well as microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.

Systems that use carbon in the filtration process work through adsorption. The carbon filtration process is composed of two distinct procedures, chemical bonding and mechanical straining.

In Chemical Bonding, an activated piece of black charcoal, which is hydrophorbic, is used. The black charcoal has an electro-positive charge that makes it a more attractive bonding agent to chemicals and other impurities. As water forces its way through the carbon, it passes slowly to allow sufficient contact time. This enables sediment in the water to attach to the carbon.

The second method of water purification using carbon is mechanical straining; carbon compressed into a solid block is used. Water molecules strain through the carbon blocks microscopic pores and effectively eliminate any particles. This method is more effective in removing a larger number of contaminants than chemical bonding because it has larger surface area of carbon.

The degree of effectiveness will depend on the flow rate of water and the contact time with the carbon. If the flow rate is too high, the filtration could have zero efficiency. These carbon filtration methods are more efficient in removing sediment, chlorine, and organic compounds from water. They are not as effective in removing dissolved inorganic compounds, minerals or salts.

These filtration systems have all proven to eliminate harmful organisms from water to a certain extent. Although water filter manufacturers claim that their products eliminate all impurities in water, the truth is that no filter is 100 percent effective. Human error as well as malfunction of the filtration system is possible.

When purchasing water filters, it is important to take note of the filtration process they use. Most people prefer those that incorporate distillation while others prefer a combination of several processes. Water filters are effective means of purifying water.

How Can I Lose 2 Lbs a Week?

|

Losing 2 lbs. a week may not seem like a lot, but it definitely will add up over time. This is especially good news for those looking to lose 5-25 lbs. You can safely lose 2 pounds a week with a few changes to your daily food intake and activity level.

How much do you need to lose?

Depending on how heavy you are will depend greatly on how easy it is to lose 2 lbs this week. If you are only 10-20 lbs overweight, weight loss can be harder than it would be for someone who is 50-100+ pounds overweight. Weight loss is possible!

How much should I eat?

First things first, starvation will only make your body hold onto fat longer. This will make it harder to lose weight. Protein and fiber are the number one choices for optimal weight loss. Getting plenty of both, as well as staying hydrated with suppress your appetite and keep you fuller for much longer. Evaluate your current diet and figure out what changes you need to make.

Start by cutting back on unnecessary sugars and carbs that only hold onto fat cells. I have yet to meet anyone who needs to eat less than 1,200 calories a day to successfully lose weight. If you only have a few pounds to lose staying within 1,200-1,500 calories a day will be the key to your weight loss. The more you exercise the more you need to eat, but do not fill up with junk. If you have more weight to lose, eating 1,500-1,800 calories a day is ideal. Everyone is different and these guidelines are simply a suggestion. Keeping a food journal and never going hungry are essential to weight loss that stays off!

How much exercise do I need?

Getting your heart rate up is another essential to weight loss. If your goal is to lose 2 lbs a week, then it is best to aim for at least 30 minutes of heart healthy cardio a day. How do you know you are working hard enough? You should not be able to sing or carry on a long conversation. Depending on how many calories you consume a day, you may need to exercise as much as 45-60 minutes a day.

Also, strength training can play a vital role in weight loss. The more muscle you gain the better you will look and the more resting calories you will burn. Every pound of muscle burns up to 50 calories a day, this can really add up! Women, typically shy away from strength training, but it is so important to weight loss and should never be skipped. Try adding two days of strength training to your regime every week.

How to find the right program for you:

Some of the best programs are the ones that allow you to never go hungry. The Day Off Diet is one of the most effective programs available because it boosts your metabolism and will never require you to count calories. You will lose weight quickly with the list of fat burning foods that will satisfy your cravings and keep you fuller longer.

Leslie M. Quesenberry recommends choosing a top quality diet program such as The Day Off Diet, Fat Loss 4 Idiots, or The Carb Rotation Diet.

Exercising on Auto Pilot

September 29, 2008 |

Fitness experts say that you can get 30% more benefit from exercise when you focus on the muscle you are working.

While it is true that you get more out of exercise if you focus on what you are doing, focusing is not necessary to gain benefits from exercise.

Sometimes I try to focus, but most of the time, it is all I can do just to show up for exercise, and not let other demands or distractions preempt my workout.

I focus on setting up my life to make exercise easy and habitual. In fact, I'd rather not have to focus on it. I get more done if I am talking to the people around me, and not focusing on the exercise itself. It can be painfully slow to focus on each move.

I don't work out as much as some people do and I always wish I could do more. When I go to the gym, I always *wish* I was one of those women who go every day and work out hard. They always look so fit!

But I do try to get some movement in as many days as possible. I also want it to be as easy and painless as possible – to insure that I will actually do it.

I settle for less if I have to.

I don't want to have to think about it.

There are many ways to do this. For instance, I go to a strength training class every Monday morning. I have to drive in the direction of the gym anyway to get to my office, so I just go to the gym before I start my appointments.

It's a great way to start the week and I always feel great all day!

Since I only commit to that 1 class, I never want to miss it. Besides, it's fun and easy since most of the same women go every week. I've trained myself to go and it's a great habit.

So even when I don't feel like going, I go anyway.

I can be mindless about exercise in some ways. I can hop on the treadmill first thing in the morning, insert music and off I go. The time goes faster if I just let my mind wander.

In fact, that's one key to success – don't think about it too much!

I understand that I may not get as much benefit out of it as I could if I were focusing on each stride, but that is a compromise I'm willing to make.

What you DON'T want to do is be mindless about eating.

I know – it begins as an early habit. You start out reading the cereal box as a kid and graduate to the newspaper as an adult.

Pretty soon, you are sitting mindlessly in front of the TV, eating in the car, and grabbing a quick bite at your desk while you work.

When you are on auto-pilot for eating, there is a cost.

It leads to eating more while being less satisfied, and gaining weight.

If you have to be on auto-pilot about something, let it be exercise!

Everyone starts a diet with only the best of intentions. When you chose your last diet, maybe it was one that you've heard a lot of good things about. It worked for these other people, it should work for you, is what you thought. So, you proceeded to throw out your sodas and junk food and start fresh by eating a group of specific foods that the plan promises will help you drop those pounds in no time.

That first day, you're really optimistic. Sure, you can eat only what it says for you to eat and not a bit more! You breeze through that first day with no problem. On the third day of eating this way, you're still hanging in there, but you're feeling a little cranky from not being able to eat that burger you saw your friend eating at lunch. You convince yourself that food shouldn't make you happy – it's all about the calories.

On the fifth day of eating your fad diet food, you're finding it difficult to raise the fork up to your mouth for one more bite of this stuff. You've been daydreaming about all the foods you miss, pizza, fries, burgers, chips, ice cream . . . you know you can't have them, but shoot. Why does dieting have to be so hard?

On day seven, you're so tired, cranky and hungry that you start to hate the sight of that salad sitting in front of you. Yeah, it's healthy, but what you really want is some REAL food. You decide right then and there that you're going to kick this diet thing to the curb and go back to eating normal again.

As you bite into that juicy burger (with all the fixings), you feel good that you're not going to be hungry anymore, but you also feel guilty for abandoning yet another diet that you swore to yourself you'd stay on until you lost X amount of pounds. If only you had more willpower.

What went wrong?

It's not your lack of willpower that derailed you.

Reason #1 – The diet was too strict. Many diets require you to follow a plan of eating only certain foods that fit into the low-fat or low-carb category. Fad diets in particular tend to restrict you to eating a very small group of foods. The plan forces you to eat these foods over and over again, and your body just isn't getting enough nutrition to sustain you for more than a few days. How can you stay positively motivated, when your brain is foggy and you feel weak and cranky?

Reason #2 – Old eating habits are hard to break – Think about it. A diet requires you to go cold turkey from eating anything you like, to following a regimented eating plan. One day you're eating pepperoni pizza, the next day you're eating nothing but salad and nuts. It's hard for your mind to make a mental adjustment that quickly. It's better to gradually introduce healthier foods into your diet. For instance, you can learn how to make a healthy pizza.

Reason #3 – Maybe you haven't committed to making a total lifestyle change when it comes to the foods you eat. Most fad diets are only for the short term. If your intention for going on the diet is to drop 5 – 10 pounds quickly, then you might achieve that goal temporarily, but you aren't learning how to eat better for your health for the long term. Ultimately, this lack of commitment leads to gaining back that 5 – 10 pounds.

Scratching your head wondering what's the difference between diet A, diet B and this new fangled diet you just heard about? Relax and let the best diet reviews online help you figure out which one is right for you. http://www.StartYourDietPlan.com

When we talk about fitness and eating habits, the first thing that comes to the mind is cholesterol. As per scientific research, it is the driving factor behind all modern day diseases. A higher intensity compared to an average amount which is required by the body leads to different life style disorders. It is believed that these are predominantly due to the consumption of increased concentration of saturated fats and bad cholesterol in one's diet.

If someone has a cardiac disorder, the cholesterol levels would further effect in the absence of sufficient work outs and other physical activities. Smoking and drinking further act as catalysts. In modern times, heart related ailments are the major causes of frequent deaths and health complications. However, if you keep a regular check on the cholesterol intake along with an active life style, you will certainly live longer. We can study the various approaches which can help reduce this dilemma.

We all work hard to earn and be wealthy, however, it is well said that health without wealth is no importance. Your standard of living should be hale and hearty to sideline any potential hazards. It is always good to cultivate such habits from an early age, so that later it becomes a routine and comes naturally. You would not need to run to a doctor every now and then as you will in the pink of your health.

The most important factor is to incorporate a regular exercise routine in your daily schedule. Even if you are engaged in any physical activity, it would do wonders for your health. This should be complemented by a well planned, natural diet which should have a positive result.

Before chalking out a diet plan, consult a nutritionist or a dietitian. They will examine the body, perform some tests and then would figure out the best possible alternative. You should make your intentions clear while following a low cholesterol diet because it will boost your confidence and you will stick to your goal. It would also be beneficial if you do some research and gather information about the different eatables which may or may not be secured for consumption. You may share your findings with the dietitian who will guide you and clarify any doubts. Without an expert guidance, it is possible that you might make wrong choices.

We all want to get a picture perfect lean and slender figure. People might use different methods out of dying necessity and indulge in wrong practices. The essential point to keep in mind is that our body is an outcome of what we eat. So, when we talk about losing weight or get a sound frame, consider what we are consuming. A diet plan would focus on lessening the intake of saturated fats, excessive calories and cholesterol to lose weight naturally.

It is wiser to include an excess of raw fruits, vegetables and water intake. Fruits and vegetables are abundant sources of vitamins and minerals along with fibrous substances. For instance apples, oranges, pears, carrots are rich sources and highly effective, when consumed in a raw and natural form. They act as roughage in the digestive tracts to help absorb the high cholesterol levels and throw them out as body wastes.

Ways to Prevent and Eliminate Cigar Breath

September 26, 2008 |

Newton's third law puts it this way: For every action there\'s an equal and opposite reaction. But the old \'70s soul song says it all much more colorfully: You always have to pay for the fun you\'ve had.

No matter what your hobby or pet pastime, there\'s always some undesirable aspect that has to be dealt with. If you\'re an athlete, you may have to spend the occasional Monday morning icing a pulled muscle. Sports spectators have to deal with hard bleacher seats, cold weather, and possibly obnoxious bellowing from the guy in the next row—unless you catch the game on TV, where you just have to put up with odd camera angles. Or let\'s say you like reading: Obsessive readers may end up with slight vision problems—in fact, graduate students in literature are often advised that they should expect (and be checked for) increased nearsightedness with each year of study. Too much TV can induce apathy and is positively correlated with depression and obesity (and with infomercials, a far worse fate). And most everybody enjoys video games, but if you enjoy them too much, you may—there are documented cases of this—incur a repetitive stress injury to your thumb. As for pet owners, well, let\'s not even talk about all the poop-scooping that becomes part of your life.

And cigar smokers have their own result of fun to consider. Specifically, the aromatic scent of their favorite cigar may attach to unwelcome places such as clothes. In fact, back when cigar smoking was the universal habit of Victorian gentleman, many of these smokers would maintain a separate outfit to wear when smoking, which would absorb the fumes. (Thus the terms \"smoking jacket\" and \"smoking cap,\" which we still use.)

But it\'s the effect of a cigar scent settling on breath that some cigar smokers may find troublesome. The considerate cigar smoker is aware of this and plans accordingly. Here are some suggestions to help you pay for the enjoyment you\'ve had—without paying too much!

1) Choose good cigars. This may seem like an obvious point, but the better-made the cigar, the less chemical the odor. Buy well-made, hand-rolled, long-filler cigars from a quality cigar outlet or online store.

2) For while you\'re smoking: Drink tea, or eat. (Mild-flavored teas are most recommended; as for foodstuffs, consider dark chocolates or other simple, strong-but-not-too-strong tastes.) \"Cutting\" your cigar with food or drink can help absorb both the aftertaste and the effects on breath.

3) Keep some fresh parsley on hand—or even a parsley plant in your kitchen or living room, or whatever room is nearest to the place where you smoke. This herb has traditionally come recommended for its odor-killing powers.

4) Chew gum. Mint-flavored gums are recommended, the stronger the better.

5) On that note, try chewing raw mint. As with parsley, you can keep it around in its herbal form and chew it undiluted after a cigar. You can also keep strong breath mints on hand.

6) Mouth sprays, as well as mouthwashes specifically intended for cigar smokers, are available commercially, and can be purchased from cigar stores or online cigar retailers. These are highly recommended. They\'re made by people who understand. Some of the anti-cigar-breath mouthwashes have the side benefit of clearing away the tar that might otherwise stain your teeth. If these mouthwashes aren\'t available, a typical mouthwash and a good tooth-brushing will be a lot better than nothing.

7) To avoid breath problems the next morning after a smoke: After a smoke, never go to bed without eating something. Even if it\'s just a tiny, simple snack, it \"cuts\" the cigar and reduces breath problems while seeming to absorb and clear away the odors in your mouth.

So, to recap: enjoy good cigars. Drink tea or eat while you smoke, or after you smoke. Brush your teeth like Mom said, and use a good mouthwash—perhaps especially a mouthwash intended for cigar smokers. And mint and thyme help too, especially for those days when you have to rush from your smoke to a work meeting or a date.

CigarFox provides you the opportunity to build your own sampler of the finest cigars that include cigar brands like Montecristo, Romeo & Julieta, H Upmann, Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Gurkha and many more. Choose from more than 1200 different cigars! Other cigar products include cigar humidors, cigar boxes, and cigar accessories like Zippo Lighters.

Realistic Body For Life Fitness and Diet Program

September 25, 2008 |

Body for Life is a more realistic approach to fitness and dieting. we cover all angles from exercises to a healthy fat burning diet. Body for Life, as a result, has many satisfied patrons.

There are lots of different both good and bad diet programs around that promise quick and easy weight reduction. But often such programs are bound to make us gain more weight in the long run than we lose on it. Here's a fitness program that more realistically keeps us fit: Body for Life.

Calorie and fat intake reduction schemes for losing weight often boomerang and produce an unwanted yoyo effect. This means losing weight now may mean gaining weight later, and maybe even double than what we lost. With Body for Life fat burning through exercises is the main thrust, supplemented with a balanced diet.

The balanced diet with body for life programs means something like 50 percent lean meat, fish, and chicken and 50 percent veggies and fruits. We eat six times a day, starting with a heavy breakfast to fuel up for the day (that's when we take more carbohydrates) and several small and quick bites later in the day. There's no fasting or starving ourselves here. According to Body for Life theory, starving the body makes it store fats and burn muscles—which is bad. The body needs the right sources of carbohydrates for this diet to enable it to burn fats through exercise.

So we eat several times a day, not just 2 or 3. But with discipline. For instance, meat per meal should not be bigger and thicker than the palm of our hand. Calorie foods should not be bigger than the size of our fist each meal. Carbohydrates from junk foods are of course a definite no-no. And we have to drink lots of water. Then, we have to religiously follow the Body for Life exercise program.

The exercise regimen consists of weight training and aerobics. The two should be alternated during the program and the scheduled exercises are done 6 days a week with a rest day. Body for Life has a specific program for training the upper and lower portions of the body, the aim of which is develop muscles and burn fat on your body.

Practitioners find the Body for Life program effective and more lasting. In fact, each year there's a US $1 million award for the best Body for Life practitioner. Just present a video of a clear physique change from before to after doing the Body for Life program. The best video testimony wins.

The Body for Life program takes 12 weeks to do, while applying both exercises and dieting. After the program period there are instructions on fitness and weight maintenance to make the gains permanent. There are no strict specified daily menus and exercise sets and repetitions. We do the program at our own pace and preference. Then we attain the fit body we have always wanted, and we attain it for life.

It's all doom and gloom on the economic front. The credit crunch, foreclosures on the increase, rising prices, we are all feeling the pinch. So when it comes to teeth whitening, is the cost of an in office procedure still justified? You still want to look and feel your best, but those visits to the dentist can really put the squeeze on your already tight budget.

What does the dentist do for you that you can't get from a home whitening kit? We first have to establish that the 'appearance zone', your front eight teeth that are the most visible, are sound. If you have damage in this area that might require work like veneers or even crowns, bleaching will be of little benefit. And if you already have this type of work, it will not react to bleaching in the same way as natural tooth enamel.

Assuming that bleaching is an option for you, how does the professional procedure differ from what you would use at home? The dental office procedure will usually consist of two visits. The first of these is to take an impression of your teeth from which a custom tray will be made. Several companies now are providing this service for their home kits, with the trays still being produced by experienced dental technicians.

On the second visit, the tray will be filled with the bleaching agent and applied to your teeth. It may need to be activated using special lighting. This type of lighting is now available at low cost for home use. There are also active agents that do not require this type of activation. The dentist may use more concentrated tooth whitening agents, meaning that the treatment is complete after this second visit, with good results achieved.

Stronger active ingredients could increase the risk of sensitivity. With a home treatment, you can control your progress by wearing the device for shorter periods over whatever period is convenient. This along with using water based whitening gels which keep the teeth hydrated, almost eliminate any risk of discomfort. And a noticeable improvement can still be achieved quite rapidly.

The belief that a professional treatment will give longer lasting results is not born out by the evidence. After millions of treatments over many years, the producers of home whitening kits can point to some impressive statistics on the quality and longevity of their results. Whatever method you choose, periodic follow up treatments will be necessary to maintain your sparkling teeth.

Returning to your dentist will still carry the increased cost factor. He will still be charging a premium for his expertise and is unlikely to offer any concessions on the cost of materials. In contrast, some companies providing home teeth whitening products offer major discounts to their existing customers for their maintenance treatments.

The dentist can offer a complete treatment in two visits but in all other respects, the home tooth whitening option stands up to scrutiny. If you want to maintain your sparkling, confident smile, despite the dire financial circumstances, home whitening is in no way inferior.

If you want to know more about home teeth whitening, who offers the best products and where you can get discounted follow up treatments, visit http://www.teethproduct.com.

Caring For Baby Skin

September 24, 2008 |

One thing is certain is that the number of young babies who are developing illness or some kind of skin allergy is constantly increasing and this is something that can no longer be ignored.

So why are so many young children and babies getting some many illnesses? Well the answer to this is the range of chemicals that are found in everyday products are putting the health of your children at risk. One example is the high number of chemicals that are present in everyday baby skin care products and if you read the ingredients on the packaging you will soon realise that many of the products do contain potentially harmful chemicals.

The skin is the largest human organ and it does need to be cared for. There are instances where the skin is very sensitive as to what comes into contact with it and you need to seek what is appropriate for your skin, because this is the only defence that the internal workings of the body have from the outside world.

Some people say that skin care products are not absorbed by the skin but this is not true. If you think of a person who is trying to quite smoking, there are patches that are available that are designed to reduce the craving for nicotine. This clearly shows that the use of a patch applied to the skin is being absorbed into the body and so what we put on our skin is absorbed into the skin and will eventually enter the blood stream.

From head to toe, the skin is our body\'s largest organ and it is extremely sensitive to whatever it comes in contact with. We tend to think of our skin only as a barrier, our body\'s first line of defense. Yet it is to realize that our skin is also very \"thirsty.\" Whatever touches the skin is absorbed to some degree directly into our body.

Think about how medicines are now commonly given through the use of a patch applied directly to the skin. This simple external exposure allows the medicine to be taken in and produce its affect on our entire body. This example dramatically illustrates that what we put on our body inevitably ends up in our body!

So what can be done to protect children from these chemicals and to avoid the body being exposed to a toxic overload? Well you need to make sure that you reading product labels and reading what is contained within the products that you are about to purchase.

If you are noticing that you are not even be able to read the ingredients label then this is a good sign that the ingredients are just cheap synthetic ingredients that are easy to reproduce in high volumes.

Overall, this diet plan allows people to consume 22.5 percent of fats, 34.5 percent of carbohydrates, and 43 percent of proteins.

Despite being designed and developed during the nineteen seventies, the Scarsdale Diet continuous to be one of the most popular and highly efficient diet programs until today. For more than 30 years, many people continue to experience the benefits and advantages of this very nice diet plan. Under the system, people must eat foods that are low in calories and carbohydrates, before they can achieve better shape and a healthier life.

Unlike all the other diet plans and programs out there, the Scarsdale Diet system is basically comprised of two main stages. The first part covers 14 days of highly structured meals, before moving on with another 14 days of less structured food selections. One of the integral parts of this diet system is the grapefruit, which must be served during breakfasts that can help people burn calories. Additionally, sugar is highly discouraged under this system, while the use of artificial sweeteners is greatly encouraged to replace its sweet taste.

Under the Scarsdale Diet system, the level of calorie-intake is significantly reduced, as this diet plan concentrates more on proteins and carbohydrates. Generally, this diet plan allows people to consume 22.5 percent of fats, 34.5 percent of carbohydrates, and 43 percent of proteins. After a couple of weeks, they can reduce their weight for about seven to 15 pounds. In order to achieve maximum results, people need to follow the strict diet plan completely. However, failure to do so can completely compromise the results of the diet program.

Because it is a very healthy weight-reducing program, the Scarsdale Diet system strictly prohibits the intake of alcoholic beverages of whatever kind and nature. Simultaneously, people cannot eat snacks except if they are vegetable broth, celery, and carrots. In terms of beverages, they can only consume diet soda, tea, or coffee. Of course, they can also consume drinks that are free from sugar. In order to replenish the lost water and minerals from their bodies, water is always an excellent option under the Scarsdale Diet system.

For those who want to follow the Scarsdale Diet system, they may eat salads only with the allowed dressings, which exclude vinegars and lemon. In the meantime, they are not allowed to eat vegetables that use fats, margarine, or butter. For breakfast, people can have tea or coffee, one slice of high-protein bread, and grapefruit. For lunch, they can eat tuna fish salad, tomatoes, as well as cold cuts. On the other hand, dinner may include high-protein bread, various salads, and roast lamb. For better results, they can also use appetite suppressants and artificial sweeteners - as with every diet it always help to tank up on clean drinking water as well to suppress the feeling of hunger.

This amazing drink is none other than..... "Chocolate Milk"

Believe it or not, but chocolate milk contains an optimal carbohydrate to protein ratio. This ratio is critical for helping refuel tired muscles after strenuous exercise and can enable athletes to possibly exercise at higher intensities in subsequent workouts. There are a plethora of protein/sports drinks to choose from but these findings may suggest, regular chocolate milk can be just as advantageous for recovery from glycogen depleting exercise compared to their high priced counterparts.

Muscles can only get bigger and stronger when there is sufficient glycogen in the muscles themselves to produce adenosine triphosphate(ATP). This is the chemical in your body that allows your muscles to contract. It's the only substrate that can do this. From a workout stand point this speaks volumes in terms of getting optimal results. If muscles are prevented from contracting your workouts will suffer greatly.

After a hard workout your muscles crave glycogen. There is a window of opportunity which is estimated to be 1-2hrs after a workout session to consume carbohydrates. Our body releases the hormone insulin in the presence of carbohydrates. Insulin will do one of two things: shove the digested carbohydrates molecule into a muscle cell for latter use as energy or it can cram the molecule into a fat cell. If we continue to eat an excess of carbohydrates but never empty our glycogen stores then the carbohydrates will be stored as fat. This is one of the reasons why people who embark on an exercise program seem to be able to eat more food and at the same time store less fat. When drinking chocolate milk immediately after a workout, insulin will shuttle both carbohydrates and protein into your starving muscles. Just take a look at the money you will save:

Popular sports drink = $3.00 per serving

1 gallon of milk = $3.50, 128 ounces = 16 ounces = 1 serving = 8 servings per gallon

Nesquik powder/syrup $4.95, 15 oz = 37 servings = 1 serving = 2 tablespoons

$8.95 for 8 servings of chocolate milk vs. $24 for 8 servings of sports drink and you have at least 29 servings of Nesquik left over!

Studies suggest that including 24 oz. of fat free or low fat milk every 24 hours as part of a reduced-calorie diet may help people lose more weight and burn more fat than cutting calories alone.

Folks the big companies can make any sports supplement sound incredible, even chocolate milk!

There is no magic bullet.... just hard work (exercise) and a sensible diet plan.

I drink protein shakes for variety, accessibility, protein and added calories. I don't drink them because I think they will improve my performance or give me the body I always wanted.

In the ever growing world of fad workouts, and bogus nutrition plans, the health conscientious person is often left bewildered and confused.

Use common sense and sound judgment when buying supplement products. Don't be fooled into thinking product A will solve your fitness problems.

Nothing compares to exercise and a balanced diet!!!!

Body building nutrition is perhaps the most important thing in any workout programme. This is an oversight that many fitness aficionados have overlooked. After running and lifting weights, some go back and chow down to an unhealthy meal which in all respects, negates whatever effort they have put in the gym.

Let me put it to you in basics. Body building nutrition is essentially what you put in your body, the raw materials that it uses to repair itself, to shape and grow your muscles. I'll use the analogy of an engine. Now imagine if you bought yourself a nice little 1.3 litre engine for your car. And over time, you feel you need to 'pump it up', adding turbo, better cooling, increasing the torque and horsepower. But the performance of it depends on what you put inside. You can't put in vegetable oil into your engine and hope to get fast paced performance can you? You need the best of the best, the necessary ingredients that will bring about the best in your engine.

Your body is the same thing. It is the biological engine that drives everything and anything within your workout. Bodybuilding has been dissected into a science, and once you over strain and over load your muscles, you need to put in the right ingredients for optimal growth and repair. This means you need to calculate how much protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals your body needs to take advantage of the time you have invested in the gym.

Protein builds muscle. Carbohydrates are essential in providing energy and replenishing the body. Glucose and fluids maintain balance and vitamins and minerals ensure your body gets enough raw materials for the next work out. Normal food can achieve this, but supplementation is a must. Remember you are putting your body on an extreme strain one you start grunting and lifting heavy weights.

I can't stress this enough. Diet is 90% of your workout. You can huff and puff all you want, lifting huge weights, but without proper nutrition you will be waylaid by injury, lethargy and the lack of progress. Plateaus in any ones workout can be almost 75% of the time attributed to the lack of proper body building nutrition.

Now there are alot of so called nutrition gurus who just spew out general information. However, everyone is different from the mesamorphs, endomorphs and ectomorphs (including their different body variations), as well as muscle density and the bodies basic own thermogenic rate. A good book should be able to spell out a nutrition that closely matches your body type, not just chucking in all sorts of stuff in the hop something goes right.

For years I have trained many clients and have managed to achieve excellent results by following basic principles put forth by body building nutrition. If you want to get optimum results from your workouts, examine your goals, training intensity and frequency and diet. It is only by balancing all three will you be able to obtain the results you desire.

What it Takes to be Healthy Inside and Out

September 18, 2008 |

There is nothing more significant apart from keeping oneself fit and healthy. Life has more to offer. Everyday entails a new challenge. So there is the need for you to be healthy inside and out. After all, the physical body that is in its perfect shape is the only key to successfully stage a battle against life's oddities.

So, what does it take to be healthy inside and out? Here are the factors that must include your checklist.

Move your body more and more. There are a lot of ways on how to keep your body moving and active at all times. It is your task to find out ways on how you can challenge your body to move. When given ample time in a day, climb the stairs instead of using the escalator especially for short distances. Run after your kids, walk your dog down your neighborhood, play tossing of balls with your friends, do some household chores, and make everything the tool to prompt your limbs to engage in some movement. Also, do some strenuous activities such as going to the gym, kicking, boxing, and the likes.

Cut down on fats. Any food that contains fat such as burgers, fried food, and fatty meats like bacon, ribs, pork, sausage, salami, and many more must be avoided. Meanwhile, the dairy products that include cottage cheese, cream, milk, and cheese should be taken in versions that bear low fat. Margarine, mayonnaise, sauces, butter, sandwich meat, and nuts should hence be eaten in minimum amounts.

Let smoking pass. As the general public warning goes, smoking is dangerous to the health. Both the teens and adults alike are engaged into smoking which poses a grave effect on the overall health. Thus, quit smoking cigarette before it gets too late.

Don't give in to stress. There are a hundred and one ways to lessen stress. Take a walk, a deep breath, read a book, have a massage, visit your friend or relative, go to the hair salon, listen to some calming music, play with your kids or pets, and many more. When you think that things have gone crazy for the day, be sure to make a graceful exit rather than let yourself be consumed by it.

Be pollution-free. There is basically nothing that you can do to get smog off the environment. But you are in control when it comes to choosing your room and the place where you stay. Plant greeneries in your backyard; be sure that your air conditioning system gives off clean air, and many more.

Cut down on too much alcohol consumption. While alcohol can be good for the body, consuming too much of such can affect your kidney and liver. More so, it can trigger cancer.

Be positive. Staying cheerful at all cost can make your day. So why deprive yourself of a happy personality?

Being healthy is not all about eating right at the apt time. It is not typically regarding the fact that you know which buttons to push to be in an absolute body form. It is a matter of practicing them.

Diabetes can be a real threat to the cardiovascular system. It comes on slowly and can wreak havoc with the bodies systems before the individual knows that they even have diabetes. Diabetes can cause harm not only to the cardiovascular system but the eyes, the nerves, the kidneys, and impede the healing process. A clinical sign that someone may have diabetes is that they may have a difficult time healing from the slightest of skin injuries. People that have diabetes are at a two to four fold increase to developing heart disease or having a stroke. The advantage that pre-menopausal women have over men is diminished when they have diabetes. (1)

According to Christopher Saudek, M.D professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimoore and past president of The American Diabetes Association (ADA)., "having diabetes is such a strong risk factor for heart disease that it's equivalent to already having had a heart attack," Just why diabetes causes heart disease on such a destructive is unknown. Dr. Robert H. Eckel, M.K., professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Denver and past president of the American Heart Association., say "It's a complicated connection".

From a physics standpoint, it can be seen that the heart is muscle and one that is reposonispible for pumping blood to the entire body. Since muscles need glucose to move and expend energy, it can be inferred what when there is a problem with he functioning of glucose iin the body, there will also be a problem with the heart as well.

There are those people that are insulin resistant. This implies that their bodies do not respond to insulin like other people. Insulin is responsible for putting sugar or glucose back into the cells instead of having it run rampant throughout the system. "insulin resistance leads to vascular dysfunction, which indicate that there is an altering of the function of the blood vessels to respond normally to the bodies hormonal signals that tell veins to expand and or contract., notes, David M. Nathan, M.D. , professor medicine at Harvard Medical School and director of the Massachusetts general hospital Diabetes Center. "It also leads to systemic, inflammation, as measured by levels of C=reactive protein and inflammatory cytokines. In this scenario, when type 2 diabetes develops there is a system of cascading events that effects many systems and causing such untoward effects such as high blood pressure, kidney disease, and heart disease.

Given as such wide spread evidence on the effects of diabetes on the cardiovascular system and other body functions, the reality of taking precautionary health measures becomes important. An estimated two out of every three adults with diabetes have hypertension. Diabetic dyslipidemia requires frequent blood work so that the individual knows what their levels of good cholesterol (LDL) and bad cholesterol (HDL) are. When the two are out of sync, a condition called atherosclerotic heat disease can occur. These people are usually candidates for heart bypass surgery, since their arteries become clogged.

In summary, those people with diabetes should take an active role in controlling their disease process. They can do this by getting regular fasting blood glucose levels and having their HDL and LDL tested. Normal values of these cholesterol levels are as follows; total cholesterol should be under 200; LDL under 200 and HDL above 50 for women, 40 for men, and triglycerides below 150. if you're LDL, HDL and triglyceride levels are also at desirable levels and you have no other risk factors for heart disease, total blood cholesterol below 200 mg/dL puts you at relatively low risk of coronary heart disease. Even with a low risk, however, it's still smart to eat a health diet, avoid tobacco smoke and try to exercise daily... Have your cholesterol levels checked every five years or as your doctor recommends, and get regular fasting blood glucose levels. This preventative health maintenance should help increase your lifespan and provide many healthy and fulfilling years.

Common Risk Factors Associated With Colo-rectal Cancer

September 17, 2008 |

There are many risk factors for coo-rectal cancer, some of these are preventable while others are not. It is thought that around half of all colo-rectal cancer deaths could be prevented through regular screenings and lifestyle changes. Here are some of the more common risk factors associated with colo-rectqal cancer.

Gender

Men are slightly more likely to develop colo-rectal cancer than women. In particular, men are about 60% more likely to develop rectal cancer while males and females have about the same incidence of colon cancer.

Age

The risk of developing colo-rectal cancer is strongly linked to age. About 98% of all cases occur in people aged over 40, around 90% in people aged over 50 and, and around 70% in people over the age of 60.

Gender

African Americans and Hispanics appear to be at a slightly greater risk of developing colo-rectal cancer than Caucasians.

Family History

There appears to be a large genetic component of colo-rectal cancer. A history of colo-rectal cancer or polyps in first degree relatives raises an individuals risk of developing the disease. Around 20% of colo-rectal cancers are thought to be due to genetic factors.

Inherited Disorders

This includes disorders such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) which leads to a large number of polyps developing in the colon or rectum at a very young age (often before the age of 20). Other inherited disorders include hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC), and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Inflammatory bowel diseases includes disorders such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn\'s disease. These are known to increase an individuals risk of developing colo-rectal cancer, particularly at a younger age.

Diet

Diets high in fat have been associated with a greater risk of colo-rectal cancer. Diets high in red and processed meats are also thought to increase colo-rectal cancer risk. People that consume low amounts of fiber are also at a greater probability of developing the disease.

Lack Of Physical Activity

Those who perform moderate exercise at least three times a week are at around a 40% lower risk of developing colo-rectal cancer than those who perform moderate exercise less than three times a week. Physical activity can also improve a persons survival outlook after being diagnosed with the disease.

Obesity

Obesity is a strong risk factor for colo-rectal cancer. One study found that people with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35 have around an 80% greater risk of colo-rectal cancer than people with a normal BMI (between 19 and 24.5).

Smoking

Smoking is thought to increase the number and size of polyps in the colon and carcinogens in tobacco are known to increase the incidence of most forms of cancer including colon and rectal cancers.

Heavy Alcohol Consumption

Studies have found that alcohol consumption of more than 25 standard drinks a week increases colo-rectal cancer risk significantly.

Type-2 Diabetes

People with type-2 diabetes are more likely to develop colo-rectal cancer and are more likely to die from it than people without type-2 diabetes, even after adjusting for risk factors common to both diabetes and colo-rectal cancer.

Creating a diet for GERD and weight loss at the same time can take a bit of time to develop, but is well worth the effort when you discover the difference it can have to your acid reflux and other GERD symptoms. Typically, the hardest part is making the initial decision and then setting your initial goal. From then on, it's a step-by-step process that depends only on you and your will power for success.

A diet for GERD will normally mean your lifestyle will be changing in terms of your eating and activity habits. Breaking old habits can be challenging its important to remember that it's not impossible, and that you are ready to take control over your acid reflux symptoms.

To ensure your success, ask yourself a few questions. These should not only be posed when you first get started, but also whenever you feel your motivation slipping, so may want to write them down and keep them handy:

- How important is it to you to get your GERD symptoms (as well as your weight) under control? What difference will the lost weight have in the way you look and feel? How will your health improve with some lost pounds? Write a list of your answers and refer back to it whenever you need incentive to keep up the good work.

- Have you ever lost weight or tried to lose weight? If you are like most people, this isn't the first time you've made the effort to shed a few pounds. However, even if you were unsuccessful in the past, or if you put the weight back on again, it doesn't mean you can't do it this time. The trick is to make lifestyle changes, not just try to lose weight for a specific time, allowing yourself to return to old habits afterward. Take gradual steps and build the right eating and exercise routine for your life in a way that you can handle over time.

- Seek out friends and family who will support you or even take on their own weight loss initiative to keep you company. Activities like weight loss or a change in lifestyle are much easier to achieve when you have someone helping you out along the way. You'll benefit from each other's support and motivation.

- Make sure that you understand all of the ways in which your life will benefit from the weight loss. Remind yourself of each of the acid reflux symptoms that will be decreased by your diet for GERD. List the health risk that will decrease when you lose weight. Don't forget all of the other health benefits you'll enjoy when you lose weight. Furthermore, you'll look and feel better and you'll have a higher energy level.

- Make the commitment to take care of yourself. Love yourself and care for yourself. Be willing to spend time and effort on your behalf.

- Be certain that you're starting a diet for GERD at the right time in your life. If you've just gone through an extremely stressful event (such as a wedding, a move, a new job, a divorce, etc), though weight loss would be good for you there is a risk that your motivation may be compromised. Avoid trying to start your new weight loss effort when you're undergoing unusual amounts of stress.

Once you've asked yourself these questions and given yourself some honest answers, you'll be able to move on to the next step for your diet for GERD. With your motivation high its time to cover some diet basics. The key to losing weight successfully is a simple equation:

Less Calories + More Exercise = Weight Loss

There is any number of diets you could choose to follow; however the key is to take into account your GERD symptoms when choosing one. So now that you have your motivations and your goals, you can take the time to find out what your acid reflux weight loss program will look like and how you'll be fitting it into your life.

An isoflavone from soy has been evaluated for its effect on various female functions such as the menopause and some effects on estrogens. Soy products have been part of the diet in the Far East for thousands of years, and it is a known fact that these people suffer fewer incidences of conditions such as breast cancer, menopausal problems, rectal cancer and diseases of the heart and joints.

The benefits that such a diet appeared to confer on those taking it initiated many studies into the active constituents of soy, and how the biochemistry involved imparted these benefits. A result of this was an intensification of investigations into many so-called -women\'s functions\' or \'women\'s problems\' that hitherto had been accepted as a part of life. Now, however, they are better understood, just as many other components of the Oriental diet are being found to have wider implications in terms of disease prevention and increasing life expectancy. So back to soy and its isoflavone content.

Soy contains a number of isoflavones, commonly known as phyto-estrogens - plant estrogens - because their chemical formula is similar to that of estrogen, a female hormone. Isoflavones possess some properties that support the beneficial properties of estrogens, and others that suppress some of the risk factors possessed by estrogen. We shall discuss here how these isoflavones are related chemically to estrogens, and how they can be used to support some specific female functions.

In order to understand how isoflavones work we go back to the 1980s, when alpha and beta estrogen receptors were discovered. Until then, the biochemistry of estrogen was not fully understood, and problems connected with estrogen had not been fully investigated.

Like all hormones, estrogen works by finding receptors that are located on cells. With regard to estrogen there are two types of receptor. The beta receptors are connected with the beneficial properties of estrogen, while the alpha receptors tend to lead to the unfavorable effects such as cancers related to estrogen. Each of your different tissue types possesses different ratios of these two receptor types.

The unfavorable alpha receptors predominate in tissues such as the breast, ovaries and uterus. The favorable beta receptors predominate in the blood cells, bladder, prostate gland, thymus and bones. Studies have indicated that isoflavones appear to attack to the beta receptors and simulate the beneficial effect of estrogen when the levels of estrogen in the body are low, and allow the proper functioning of these cells in the body.

The alpha cells are also populated by isoflavones, which then protect these areas of your body against cancers that can be stimulated by estrogen, such as cancers of the breast, ovaries and uterus. It appears that cancers that can develop when the alpha receptors are populated by estrogen do not occur when isoflavones have captured them

Isoflavones are present in the form of glucosides. These are composed of sugar and non-sugar components, the latter known as aglycones, and the main isoflavones in soybean are based on the three aglycones genistein, daizein and glycetein. The glucosides are water soluble and are broken down into enzymes known as B-glucosidases in the intestine. This releases the aglycones that can be further metabolized into other substances.

Current studies are examining the possibility that a diet rich in isoflavones taken early in life up to teenage years can reduce the incidence of breast cancer in later years. Isoflavones have been used in the laboratory to reduce the growth of prostate cancer cells, and animal studies have reinforced this finding. The fact that Japanese men suffer less from prostate cancer than those eating diets low in isoflavones also tend to reinforce this connection.

The same mechanism can be used to in prostate cancer by binding to testosterone receptors. Genistein, in particular, can help treat certain types of cancer by inhibiting enzymes such as tyrosine kinase that can become hyperactive and overstimulate the growth of potentially cancerous cells.

It is probable that the estrogen binding facility of isoflavones complements the activity of estrogen in women with low levels of hormone. When the female estrogen level is low, isoflavones can reduce the effects of the menopause and symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats become less severe. While not all women benefit, it has been found that women with these symptoms tend to suffer less when taking a diet rich in soy foods containing isoflavones.

In addition to its moderating effect on these cancers, and its effect on the menopausal symptoms on many women, soy isoflavones possess a few other beneficial health properties. They are strong antioxidants, and help to support the immune system by mopping up free radicals. They also help to protect from atherosclerosis by preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and depositing it as plaque in the arteries.

There is evidence that isoflavones in the diet can help to maintain strong healthy bones. This is largely through the fact that Chinese women taking a diet rich in soya suffer fewer fractures than those on a low soy diet, but studies are continuing into potential reasons for this. Estrogen receptors in bones regulate bone growth and density. Isoflavones can modulate these receptors and promote greater bone density just like estrogen hormones with out estrogen side effects.

Isoflavones have few dietary sources, the richest being soybeans and other soy products. These are very low in the non-Asian diet, so few people, other than Asians, receive the benefit of these phytochemicals. This is believed to be the major reason for Asians suffering significantly lower rates of certain cancers than non-Asians.

Soy milk and tofu are the richest sources, although there is no standardization of isoflavones in soy-based foodstuffs. This is because the isoflavone content varies according to growing conditions, although a diet containing the recommended quantities of soy foods, such as soy milk or soy beans, together with a low cholesterol diet, should help women to overcome many of the problems associated with excess estrogen, or a lack of it especially when taking in conjunction with essential fatty acids.

Any supplement containing soy will be beneficial to most women, particularly during the menopausal stages, although the effect of isoflavones on certain cancers to which women are susceptible cannot be ignored. Such supplements should therefore be used by all women from at the teens onwards, studies having indicating that an isoflavone-rich diet should be beneficial over the longer term.

Isoflavones from soy is effective in helping to support female functions, although the normal Western diet is traditionally very short in these forms of phytoestrogen. Isoflavones can modulate estrogen receptor sites through out the body helping the body regulate its functions and easy the symptoms related to a estrogen deficient body.

Can I Buy Viagra in the UK?

September 15, 2008 |

Viagra is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, once you exit the territory that regulates these drugs then you are on your own. You give up the promise that your Viagra is calibrated correctly or even real. Find out what to look for in a real Online Pharmacy selling Viagra.

When you are searching for a drug like Viagra you should be forewarned that once you tread outside of the United States and Canada, you are treading in very dangerous territory. Viagra is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and once you exit the territory that regulates these drugs then you are kind of on your own. You basically forfeit any guarantees that your Viagra is calibrated correctly or even is truly Viagra at all. You have left an open invitation for those who try to sell generic Viagra, which does not even exist.

Make sure that before you purchase Viagra that you are working with a reputable pharmacy. When you see generic Viagra advertised for $2 a pill, which should raise a flag of caution somewhere in your mind that something is wrong. The truth is that if you find generic Viagra for that cheap then you are likely getting a placebo or a sugar pill. If you are lucky, you might find mere traces of Sildenafil citrate in them but not even close to enough to cause a firm and rigid erection.

Another very important thing to remember is that you must have a prescription in order to get Viagra. Attaining this prescription is even possible online by filling out the appropriate information, allowing it to be submitted to the physician, he returns your call and verifies the information, and then he dispenses the prescription to you. Real Viagra, generic or not, does require a valid prescription.

You must make sure that when you order your Viagra from the Internet that you use a trusted source and disregard those that claim to sell you a pill for literally pennies in comparison. There are plenty of counterfeit companies out there that can make 100% profit by selling you some sugar pills. Fake Viagra pills pose a real possibility that they may have been manufactured in factories that were never regulated in parts of the world that do not practice the same quality pharmaceutical standards as the United States. Avoid, no matter what the savings are, medications such as Viagra that you not require a consultation with a physician before writing the prescription.

Remember this information before you decide to place an online order outside of the United States because nothing is certain after that. And in the event that you do get ripped off you should immediately contact the manufacturer of Viagra, which is Pfizer and let them know what happened.

Bilberry is a part of the herb world that has recently begun re-emerging because of recent scientific discoveries linking the fruit to therapeutic properties in blood vessel-related disorders. If you happen to suffer from any disorder that is related to weaken blood vessels, then you should definitely think about bilberry as part of your treatment, as it can be safe and extremely effective. Bilberry is a rich source of anthocyanidins, which gives it the unique ability to stabilize and protect collagen stores. This helps to prevent capillary leakage and hemorrhage. Bilberry is currently being used to treat vascular and blood disorders, and is also a main ingredient in the treatment of many visual problems. It has even been proven effective for varicose veins, thrombosis, diabetes, macular degeneration, and angina.

Thanks to its rich amounts of anthocyanosides, bilberry is an extremely valuable treatment for a variety of disorders in which leaky veins cause tissue damage. Containing over 15 different anthocyanosides, bilberry protects the veins and arteries, as it boosts a great deal of physiological processes that results in the improved integrity of capillary walls. Additionally, anthocyanosides prevent platelets from sticking to the walls of vessels, which helps to prevent the formation of blood clots. Bilberry has shown healing properties including: analgesic, anti-arthritic, anti-clotting, antiulcer, anti-edemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-osteotic, cyclooxygenase inhibitor, inhibits collagenase, inhibits elastase, lipoxygena, smooth muscle relaxant, lowers blood sugar, and vasodilator.

With more than 100 names from around the world, bilberry also can be known by: huckleberry, whortleberry, European blueberry, myrtle bilberry, myrtle blueberry, myrtle whortleberry, Rocky Mountain whortleberry, red whortleberry, black grouseberry, low bilberry, mountain blueberry, huckleberry, and blueberry. Bilberry is a perennial shrub that can be commonly found in many different climates around the world that are characterized by damp woodlands and moorlands in northern Europe, northern regions of America, and parts of Canada.

Bilberry grows as a small shrub with wiry, angular branches that do not usually grow over a foot high. The branches of bilberry bear waxy flowers and black berries that are covered with a grey bloom when they are ripe. The leather-like leaves of bilberry are initially rose color, but turn to a yellowish-green in the summer and a fiery red in the autumn.

Growing abundantly in areas of England and flourishing best on high ground in the north and west regions of Britain, bilberry possesses a round fruit or berry that has a flat top and is approximately the size of a black currant, with a taste that is slightly acidic. The berry bushes prefer filtered shade and moist, fertile soil that is acidic and non calcareous. The bilberry plant is related most closely to blueberries and currants, all of which belong to the genus Vaccinium. Bilberries are rich in carbohydrates, tannin, vitamin A, and vitamin C. It also contains glucoquinine, which is able to lower blood sugar.

Finally, bilberry is considered an astringent; it exhibits antibacterial properties in the intestines. Bilberry's analgesic properties are often thought to come from chlorogenic-acid and ferulic-acid content. Bilberry contains copper, quercetin, linoleic-acid, magnesium, pantothenic acid, ursolic acid, and zinc. This herb is good for the parts of the body that contain small fragile blood vessels such as the eyes and this is why this herb is associated with promoting eye health.

Since 1998, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have approved three oral drugs for erectile dysfunction: Sildenafil (Viagra), Vardenafil (Levitra), and Tadalafil (Cialis). Backed by the official administration for approved drugs, these three are the safest you can get at the moment for treating erectile dysfunction.

HOW SAFE IS "SAFE?"

This is the first thing to ask before taking any drugs for erectile dysfunction. Always remember that it is always safer to consult your doctor first before taking any treatment, as you might have some medical condition which makes it unadvisable for you to take even the safest of drugs.

Knowledge and caution are also important things to consider when taking drugs for erectile dysfunction. Even the safest choices may cause severe side effects when taken without proper knowledge.

Here are some things you need to know before taking any of the safe drugs for erectile dysfunction:

BASIC FACTS

- Sildenafil (Viagra) has been in the market since it was approved by the FDA in 1998. It was originally seen as a possible treatment for hypertension and angina pectoris. Seeing its potential as a substance that could help induce penile erection, it was marketed as such by Pfizer.

- Recommended dose is 50 mg but may be adjusted from 25 mg to 100 mg, depending on the patient's health condition.

- Vardenafil (Levitra) is one of the competitors of Viagra. It was co-marketed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals and GSK until 2005. Now, Levitra is marketed solely by Bayer while Vivanza (also a vardenafil) is marketed by GSK.

- Tadalafil (Cialis) is another competitor of Viagra which gained FDA approval in 2003. It was developed by ICOS and is distributed by Lilly ICOS, LLC, (joint venture of ICOS Corporation and Eli Lilly and Company).

- Recommended dose for both Levitra and Cialis is 10 mg but may still be increased to 20 mg as recommended by the doctor.

- Levitra also has 2.5 mg doses available.

- These drugs are phosphodiesterase (PDE5) inhibitors. By blocking the PDE5 enzyme, levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (GMP) are maintained, thus increasing the level of nitric oxide during sexual stimulation. This then causes the blood vessels to dilate and increase the blood flow in the penis which is necessary to sustain an erection.

- Taking these drugs without any sexual stimulation will not cause an erection.

DURATION ASSESSMENT

The effects of Viagra and Levitra can last from four up to five hours while Cialis, also known as "The Weekend Pill," lasts longer (up to 36 hours).

These drugs must be taken at least one hour before sexual activity because it takes about this amount of time to take effect.

PRECAUTIONS

· Never take these drugs more than once a day.

· Taking PDE5 inhibitor drugs may cause sudden loss of eyesight in one or both eyes (NAION). Though this may be an extreme case, people with heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol level, and/or certain eye problems have a greater chance in having this problem.

· For those who have heart problems and are taking nitrate-based drugs should not take PDE5 inhibitor drugs because it can cause a sudden life-threatening case of low blood pressure.

· Those using alpha-blockers are safer to lower their dosage intake and not use PDE5 inhibitor drugs within 4 hours because their combination can cause an immediate drop in the blood pressure.

SIDE EFFECTS

Drugs for erectile dysfunction, no matter how safe, may still cause user to experience side effects. A person's reaction to the drug used will depend on the cause of his erectile dysfunction or his medical condition.

Common side effects may include headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle pain, nasal stuffiness, flushing, dizziness, or diarrhea. Some allergic reactions such as rashes, itchiness, swelling, or trouble breathing may also be experienced.

In rare and extreme cases, the following side effects may occur: hearing problems, loss of vision, cyanopsia (seeing everything in blue), priapism (persistent erection), hypotension, myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, and stroke.

Can’t or Won’t

If there is one thing that I have learned in life is that people in general do not like change. There are any number of motivators that we could list here that would cause someone to make a change in their life. However, there is and never will be a motivator as powerful or more assured of getting change out of people as "pain". As an example, I am sure that you know someone that simply does not like to go to the dentist. Over the years I have known any number of people that simply did not like going to the dentist for one reason or another and as such short of being threatened with death you would not find them in a dentist office.

The exception to that rule is a tooth ache that gradually increases in intensity to a point where the pain is no longer tolerable. At this point the pain of the tooth has surpassed their fear of walking into the dentist office. Think of your comfort zone as a box that you live in and outside that box you will find change. As I mentioned there are any number of things that will motivate a person to step outside that comfort zone and go through the change that waits outside of their comfort zone. Now, think about the one thing that will get people to move outside of their comfort zone when nothing else will. In many cases that motivator is some type of discomfort (pain) or fear of the pain that will be experienced without the change required to avoid it.

I see this all too often and it typically goes something like this. I've talked with a potential new customer that is having health issues of some type. We've discussed the challenges that they are having and feel confident that I have a product that will help them improve the quality of their life. Keep in mind that in many cases these products have been through double blind placebo human clinical trials with third party validation – the gold standard of testing. As such there is solid science proving that these products will work. The person in question has tried the product and during the follow up I discover one of the following:

- The product was not taken as recommended.
- The product wasn't taken at all.
- The product was taken and there were positive results, but they are not going to continue with the product because________(you fill in the blank)
- And the list goes on. All of these tell me there is nothing that I can do to help this person, which is very disheartening.

Mainly due to the fact that if they were willing to make a change at this point, further complications could be avoided down the road. As I have heard all of my life: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Very often I end up talking to these same people down the road and the only thing that has changed is that the discomfort has reached a point that they are willing to make a change. Or, as I stated early the fear of the pending discomfort has reach a point as which they are now willing to try something to avoid the pending pain. For reasons that could fill a book the obstacles that they had during the initial interaction are no longer such an obstacle. The cost isn't such a problem, the taste might not be so bad, or now remembering to take the product on a daily basis won't be such a problem after all. A great, but sad example of this is someone that has an addiction. They will find a way to get a fix regardless of whether they can afford anything else. I known people on fixed incomes that struggled with the cost of their medications, groceries, etc, etc, but always had cigarettes on hand.

The sad part is that we all have a choice to make and often, so many people choose to make poor decisions or no decision at all – which is really the same as making a bad decision. There are mountains of research showing that with a consistent day to day wellness plan we can avoid much of the pain and discomfort that we put ourselves through. Worse yet, if we ignore our health long enough we end up talking to a doctor that writes a prescription that makes us feel better (or at least covers up one problem), but has not addressed the real problem. In more cases than not we are taking prescriptions that simply mask the under lying problem and as such we continue to do more damage to our bodies. To further complicate matters many of the prescriptions cause serious side effects and in millions of cases each year death. Great you no longer have the symptoms that you were suffering from, but now you are dead because of complications. Not a good trade off from my perspective.

So, if these prescriptions are not addressing the real problem, what is the real problem?

Aging. In case you didn't catch that the real problem is "AGING". If we address this single problem many of the underlying symptoms go away. Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Arthritis, Cardiovascular Disease, High Blood Pressure, and this is just the start of the list. Fortunately there is a company that has the science and technology to address the single problem "Aging" and has come up with a line of products that have been verified through double blind placebo human clinical trials to address this problem of aging. Univera LifeSciences has a phenomenal product line that is ground in latest cutting edge Anti-Aging science. Their line of products AgelessXtra, Ageless Essentials, Ageless Prime, and RegeniCare, just to name a few are unparalleled in the nutritional supplements industry. For those that are curious about more details on these products I will be providing an in-depth review of these products and more, under our Product Review section, with references to any scientific research that is available.
